Sympower expands multi-market battery optimisation solutions to Greece

First the Nordics, then Greece. After successfully launching its battery solutions in the Nordics, where it currently manages a portfolio of hundreds of megawatts, Sympower is now turning to Greece. As an independent multi-market optimiser and route-to-market provider, Sympower will help battery developers and project owners diversify income streams, receive revenue guarantees, and increase project bankability.
Sympower’s Greece and BESS experts covered in detail the Greek energy space and its opportunities for battery storage developers and project owners in an hour-long webinar, available on replay.
A shiny future for Greece’s storage industry
A lot of sun, not so much storage - until now. With solar now accounting for 21% of electricity demand, Greece faces increased risks of curtailment. Curtailments surged to 860 GWh in 2024, nearly three times higher than in 2023, and the market experienced 11 hours of negative electricity prices, driven by oversupply during peak solar hours. To overcome this challenge and realise its energy transition, Greece plans to add 4.7 GW of utility-scale battery storage capacity across its transmission and distribution networks.
Sympower is already Greece's largest demand-side flexibility provider, managing over 300MW of distributed flexible assets, and is the first aggregator to participate actively in mFRR Up and Down activations with a fully dispatchable portfolio. This unique profile ideally positions the company to leverage its local expertise in trading dozens of assets on balancing markets. Building on its experience in multi-market optimisation for batteries in the Nordics, Sympower will enable battery owners and developers in Greece to access balancing markets for capacity and energy, as well as wholesale markets.
“Expanding our flexibility services to battery storage in Greece is a natural step,” explained Konstantinos Athanasopoulos, Sympower’s Commercial Director for Greece. “Batteries are crucial to Greece’s energy future, both to enable a complete integration of renewable energy and to strengthen the grid. We know Greece’s flexibility markets inside and out, so we’ll be able to provide more than just multi-market optimisation to battery developers. Our revenue guarantee model means we can be their partners from the early stages of financing to monetisation.”
Sympower’s approach: tailored solutions backed by multi-market optimisation and multiple revenue structures
Sympower provides route-to-market services for large-scale battery developers and owners, from connection and pre-qualification to trading and real-time optimisation on multiple markets. The company’s decade-long experience managing energy assets for commercial and industrial businesses enables it to combine battery assets in complex trading strategies.
Sympower offers several commercial and revenue models, such as floors and tolling, which provide guaranteed revenue to battery project owners and developers. The company also supports BESS developers through project implementation, asset management and health monitoring, and helps them build strong business cases.
As an independent optimiser with a strong pan-European track record, Sympower is uniquely positioned to leverage the full value of grid-scale battery projects. Its expansion into Greece reflects the company’s commitment to supporting developers and investors in scaling faster and accelerating Europe’s energy transition.
